About the Town
Joseph Snow first settled in the area of Winn in 1820, the year Maine also became a state, establishing Snowville along what is now the Old Military Road off US Route 2. The town continued to be called Snowville, or River Plantation No. 4, until 1852 when the name was changed to Five Islands Plantation.
Finally, in 1857, the town was incorporated as Winn, named for John M. Winn, who bought the township in 1843. Winn grew quickly. About five miles away from the town center in East Winn, a sawmill, grist mill, and shingle mill thrived. And in 1863, Shaw Tilson & Co., later Shaw Brothers, built the world’s second-largest tannery near the town’s steamboat landing.
